IL MACELLUM DI PUTEOLI E POZZUOLI
Il macellum di Puteoli, meglio noto con il nome di Serapeo o Tempio di Serapide poiché vi fu
ritrovata la statua dell’omonimo Dio egizio, non è altro che il mercato della città di epoca romana.
Costruito tra la fine del I sec. e l’inizio del II sec. d.C è oggi diventato il metro di misura del
fenomeno sismico del bradisimo. Infatti l’innalzarsi e l’abbassarsi del suolo ha comportato
l’allagamento dell’area e sulle colonne sono visibili a diversi livelli i segni dell’erosione dell’acqua
marina. Il Serapeo è inglobato nella struttura urbana odierna nei pressi del porto e a poca distanza
dalla rocca del Rione Terra dove si insediò la colonia romana di Puteoli nel 194 a.C.
The macellum of Puteoli, better known as the Serapeum or Temple of Serapis because there was
found the statue of the homonymous Egyptian Divinity, is nothing more than the food-market
(Macellum) of Roman times.
Built between the end of the I century BC and the beginning of the II century AD, it has become
the yardstick of seismic phenomenon of bradyseism now. In fact, the rise and fall of the soil has led
to the flooding of the area and the columns have visible signs of erosion at different levels of
marine water. The Serapeum is incorporated in the modern urban structure near the port and the
oldest part of town Rione Terra, where the Roman founded the colony of Puteoli in 194 BC.
